Do you buy Valentine’s day gifts for your kids? It’s a question that’s brought divided opinion on the parenting website Netmums. For some parents the answer is ‘absolutely not’ while others go all-out on the day with cards and presents, Valentine’s themed crafts and heart-shaped food. Me? I love Valentine’s Day and my two children have always been part of it.
Ever since they were little we’ve celebrated Valentine’s Day as a family. The kids used to come home from school with a hand-made card and the four of us would have a special Valentine’s meal together in the evening. There would be flowers on the table and Adele and Emile – my two little gooseberries – would watch Matthew and me exchanging little presents, like a book or heart-shaped chocolates.

In America, they’re really into celebrating Valentine’s Day with their kids. According to one survey, 85% of parents will be giving their kids a Valentine’s gift this year. I wonder how many parents in the UK will buy something for their children?

I think it’s great that there are Valentine’s books for children. I love giving the gift of reading and what better time than Valentine’s Day to bring a new book into your child’s life? Especially a book that teaches them about love and compassion.
I’ve always thought of Valentine’s Day as a time to celebrate our united love as a family. Even though my children are grown-up now my lovely big gooseberries still love spending Valentine’s Day with us. I can’t wait for February 14th.
Happy Valentine’s everyone!
