“The most important thing we’ve learned,

So far as children are concerned”

What we expect and what we see

are not the same as what things be.

That anthill into which they dig,

Is a battlefield oh so big,

    where six-legged warriors will defend

their queen and family to the end.

The dirt washed from them in the bath

tells tales of joy and fun and wrath

of digging deep to see what’s there

and falls and fights without a care.

So maybe if we stop to see

and listen to them maybe we

can learn to see through eyes

would what we see be a surprise?

  2. Avatar katie walters says:

“The most important thing we’ve learned,
So far as children are concerned”
Is that mommy & daddy love us,
And in them we can trust.
We’ve learned that puddle jumpings fun,
and we never say no to playing outside in the sun.
Cuddles are great, even better when were sleepy,
And books are amazing, what adventures to see.
Being a child is great; no worries, lots of play,
    And new adventures everyday

  3. Avatar Sarah-Jane Laycock says:

“The most important thing we’ve learned,

So far as children are concerned”

    That behind the angelic face

    Lies the potential for disgrace

    Embarrassment and shame WILL follow

    Your apologies WILL sound hollow

As the next generation takes shape

Your mouth frequently will end up agape!

    Laughter, tantrums and tears

Induce hope, pride and deep fears

But before you utter that moan

Remember the best is home grown………………..

  4. Avatar Denise says:

The most important thing that we have learned
So far as children are concerned
Is that their love isn’t given
    It has to be Earned

  5. Avatar felicity hancock says:

The most important thing that we have learned
So far as children are concerned
is if they don’t eat and sleep
    they keep under your feet
and its much less fun being stern!

  6. Avatar amelia avossa says:

The most important thing we’ve learned,

So far as children are concerned

    That greens taste yucky

And its fun to get very mucky

You must wrap up warm when its cold.

And always be nice to the very old

A nice roald dahl book before bed

makes dream fantastical in your head 🙂

  7. Avatar ToCo says:

“The most important thing we’ve learned,
So far as children are concerned”…
    teach them well,
in ten fold…it will be returned”.

    Love, patience, praise,
    A parent will realize,
    how important these are,
    in your children’s eyes!

  8. Avatar Jenny says:

The most important thing we’ve learned,
So far as children are concerned,
Is that we must feed their imaginations,
    With books and poetic creations,
Allowing them to remain children for longer,
And their desire for playing to be stronger,
Making marvelous medicines, using all the kitchen supplies,
Acting like a Twit, and sometimes telling naughty lies,
Laughing at Revolting Rhymes, they can be such Dirty Beasts,
Always on the look out for their next chocolate cake feast,
Hiding from Witches, underneath the bed,
Wishing you had read them Matilda instead,
So many books to choose from, who could say which is the best,
Through Roald Dahl’s writing, we truly have been blessed.

    1. Avatar Melanie C says:

      I love this, Jenny! xx

  9. Avatar Melanie C says:

The most important thing we’ve learned,
So far as children are concerned

Is to never leave the crusts on bread
of sandwiches that are being fed
and to never assume that fruit or meat
are suitable alternatives to all things sweet

and to always buy the shoes with the laces
to see the confused looks on their faces
but to offer to help to tie the knots
before they become falling little tots

    and that something really small
like learning to catch a ball
is a really big achievement, see?
And should be greeted with praise and glee

and when the team wins and you couldn’t be prouder
to pray that you’ve got enough washing powder
to remove the demon grass stains that are dawning
ready for practise first thing in the morning!

  10. Avatar Beverley Gibbs says:

The most important thing we’ve learned,
so far as children are concerned,
is the things they like very much,
are the precious things they muct not touch!

So mummy’s favourite word is “No!”
she shouts it all day long
It’s mostly aimed at what I’m touching
it seems all I touch is wrong!

She tells me “don’t touch that”
    and “leave that thing alone”
    It’s surprising how many things
are out of bounds at home!

    I’m never allowed to explore
    glasses, plug sockets and wires.
She even says I can’t touch matches
    “because they might start fires!”

She says I should just play with
    my teddy-bears and toys,
    But doesn’t mummy understand
they’re no fun for little boys?

    Little boys love shiny things,
and things they should not touch.
It’s all the things that are not mine
    that I like very much.

I do try to keep mum happy
and just play with all my toys,
    But when mummy’s not looking
I’ll try not to make noise…

as I explore all the ornaments
and pull things to the ground,
    and sit amongst the forbidden things;
the cool stuff that I’ve found!

When mummy sees what I have done
I’ll look at her and smile,
and I know that smile will make sure
she’s only angry for a while!

For now I’ve learnt my lesson
and I’ll play nicely on the floor.
    But secretly I’m eyeing up
    other cool stuff to explore!

  11. Avatar Gilla says:

The most important thing we’ve learned,
so far as children are concerned,
is that is is completely absurd
to expect them to be seen but never heard.

  12. Avatar cheryl dawn lovell says:

the most important thing we’ve learned,
so far as children are concerned
is that they need lots love and a stable home
and not to have fighting parents and feel like a pawn
a cuddle at night and a consistent routine,
to encourage their potential and not demean.
A hot meal at night and a warm bed to sleep,
Kisses and cuddles and the odd treat.
They need to feel special, safe and loved
an adult to rely on and not an ounce of distrust

when they are older, they need some space
spreading their wings at a slow pace
mistakes they will make, but we hope only a few
but they will have some support, hopefully from you

  13. Avatar Lisa Dent says:

The most important thing we’ve learned
As far as children are concerned
Is give them lots of food and drink
Wash their clothes so they don’t stink
Let them skip and jump and run
Every day they must have fun
Hug them tight when they feel sad
Laugh inside when they drive you mad
Read them books and make up rhymes
    Let imagination shine
So if you’re looking for advice
These few words, so true and nice
There are greater things for your concern
Just love your kids and you’ll soon learn

  14. Avatar Georgie says:

The most important thing we’ve learned,
As far as children are concerned,
Is patience, kindness, love and time,
And don’t forget that glass of wine!

  15. Avatar Stacey Gahan says:

The most important thing we’ve learned,
So far as children are concerned,
Is that we must show them love everyday,
And scare their imaginary demons away,
We must teach them well and make them smile,
And encourage them to go the extra mile,
We must stand by proudly and watch them grow,
    But remember we’re the parents,
    We’re allowed to say no.

  16. Avatar Lisa Troccoli says:

“The most important thing we’ve learned,
So far as children are concerned”
is to let them be children happy and free,
help them learn so school is a breeze,
take them to swimming, football and gym,
giving them things of which we only dreamed,
fly on a plane or travel by road,
see the sea, sand and other foreign lands,
admire them as they ride on their bikes,
knowing you taught them these special things,
smile when santa and the tooth fairy come,
because innocence is the most beautiful thing.

  17. Avatar Sam says:

The most important thing we’ve learned,
So far as children are concerned,
Is that you don’t need lots and lots of pennies
    To entertain your tiny babies.
No need for stacks and stacks of toys
For passing the time of girls and boys,
All you need is your cleverumptious brain
    And imagination to entertain.

From building dens with blankets and chairs,
To roaring in a dinoflompers lair,
    Cardboard boxes take off 5-4-3-2-1
Flying up to the planet of the Wumblewom.

Flying kinglekomplers on a windy day,
Splashing in pudgewunkles is just child’s play.
It doesn’t cost to spend a day at the park
kicking up leafwifflers and listening for snarks.

If the weather’s horridumfus you can just stay inside,
Dancing like loonpopplers to music and rhyme.
Wizzdoodling on paper with pencils and pens
Inviting over to play your specialdifferous friends.

Now parents your most important quality
Is not to offer the latest fizzwongling novelty
What a child needs more than once in a while
Is your time to play, be sillyoncious and smile.

  18. Avatar Cindy Gillespie says:

“The most important thing we’ve learned,
So far as children are concerned”
is that they are a funny crowd
who are in the most rather loud.

They wake you up by jumping upon
the bed, in wellies at the crack of dawn
    and constantly throughout the day
demand to be fed, entertained and let out to play.

The noise continues without a stop
until their batteries run out and they drop.
Then it’s up the stairs to bed they go
with James and the Giant Peach in tow.

They know each word, none can be missed
then their eyes slowly close and they’re goodnight kissed.
They get up in the morning and you’re just waiting on when
they’ll start jumping all over the bed once again.

  19. Avatar Kelly Hooper says:

The most important thing we’ve learned,
So far as children are concerned
Is that though they may be very small
They’re guaranteed to soon be tall

You may get handprints on the wall
And many tears each time they fall
But soon they grow and move away
So you should enjoy each and every day.

Let them paint and make a mess
stay calm each time they act a pest
For when they’ve grown and calm is here
    you’ll miss the noise . . . until grandkids appear 😉

  20. The most important thing we’ve learned,
So far as children are concerned
That the monster lurking beneath the bed
is more than an imaginary beast in her head
it has fangs and breath that is terribly smelly
and jaw so square it could of possibly swallowed a telly
you look beneath there and all you see is my crocodile slippers
I look beneath there I see scary, chattering nippers
sending me all into a shivery quiver
like the feeling I get when you make me eat liver
so remember when I climb the stairs tonight
as you kiss me slurrrppp and tuck me in tight
that im likely to need a drink or an extra story read
cause you know that monster is not just in my head!

  21. Avatar CHRISTINE ANDREWS says:

The most important thing we’ve learned
So far as children are concerned
    That unconditional love
    When push comes to shove
    Is most definitely returned

  22. Avatar Jenny Smurthwaite says:

The most important thing we’ve learned,
as far as children are concerned
Is that they need fun and games
    And that has been confirmed!
So next time you hear ‘I’m bored’
Its crucial it is not ignored
Give her or him a book to read
A happy child will be restored

  23. Avatar Chloe says:

The most important thing we’ve learned,
So far as children are concerned,
Is don’t leave them stuck indoors,
While you get on with boring chores,
Take them out and go to the park,
Do your chores when it gets dark,
Have fun with them and run about,
Laugh and jump, play games and shout,
    Let your imaginations run wild,
(It’s so much fun to be a child),
Make up stories of castles and knights,
Of dragons that soar up to great heights,
Tell tales of deserts, mountains and seas,
Of jungles with naughty monkeys in trees
They grow up so fast, then fly the nest,
Make the most of these years they are the BEST!

  24. Avatar Wendy Shippam says:

The most important thing we’ve learned,
So far as children are concerned
Is that the BFG is not scary at all you see,
That you do not have to be rich to own all your hearts desire…
…think of Charlie and his factory,
And most important of all that Green Eggs and Ham
are most certainly better than food cooked by Mam!

  25. Avatar Lesley Bain says:

The most important thing we’ve learned,
So far as children are concerned,
is that they always make us smile,
and fill our hearts up all the while 🙂

  26. Avatar Sue Harrison says:

The most important thing we’ve learned,

So far as children are concerned.

    What’s right one day,

    Is wrong the next.

    Your brain will boil,

    You will be vexed.

    But one sweet smile,

    And cuddle tight.

    Nothing else matters,

    And everything’s all right.

  27. Avatar clyde mactavish says:

The most important thing weve learned
so far as children are concerned
is the look on the face of a sguiggly worm
when the worm sees the child squirm

  28. Avatar Carolina J. says:

The most important thing we’ve learned,
So far as children are concerned,
Is to open your eyes and think twice
Before the care free days slip past us, try to make this last us.
    We’re blameless, aimless…ignorance is bliss!
Growing up is a choice- why not give it a miss?

  29. Avatar Debbie M says:

The most important thing we’ve learned,
So far as children are concerned,
They do the opposite of what you say
Pick their noses and eat snot all day
(Much worse, of course, is picking your bum.)
Kids don’t tell Dad that they already asked Mum
They make up big fat juicy whoppers
Scare granny with handfuls of party poppers
You scold them ’til your face is blue
It’s a waste of time, you know that’s true
And worst of all, whatever you do
They will grow up to be exactly like you

  30. Avatar sue willshee says:

The most important thing we’ve learned,
So far as children are concerned
Is to never change your table cloth
Before trying to feed them sloppy broth
And never try to make them go
For a bath during their favourite tv show
Don’t expect them to put away their toys
Or books, or clothes (especially boys)
Girls may look like pretty ballerinas
But here’s a secret (just between us)
All children want to make a mess
That’s just the thing that they love best.

  31. Avatar Jennifer Dyson says:

The most important thing we’ve learned,
So far as children are concerned,
Is that no matter what it is you say,
They will always find a way to stray,
Turn ever chore into a game,
No single day is ever the same.

They will make you laugh and make you cry,
and push the boundaries and always try.
They will bring you hope and cause you pain,
And jump in puddles after the rain.
But most of all they always give off,
Their ever lasting all encompassing love!

  32. Avatar Rebecca Cleary says:

The most important thing we’ve learned,
So far as children are concerned,
Is that they come in different types,
Each with their own little Gripes………

    Take that one Augustus Gloop,
Into his mouth food he would scoop.
    Veruca Salt the little Madam,
Screams and shouts and throws a tantrum!
    There’s little Goldie Pinklesweet,
Mistakenly thought she was in for a treat.
Lastly not leastly and by no means the worst,
Violet Beauregarde – she chewed ’til she BURST!!
There’s ones that are messy, dirty and loud,
Giggler’s and Wiggler’s…They all make us proud.

All Children are different, No two come the same,
If they did it’d be boring and frankly quite plain!
The one thing they all share is the things that they crave,
The things that can make them sit up and behave,
They all want their fair share of love and attention,
Its that simple and obvious, But deserves a BIG mention.

So sit down with them every once in a while,
reach over and grab from that rather large pile.
A book from the Famous Roald Dahl Collection,
Open it up and grab them and enjoy the affection 🙂

  33. Avatar Michelle Maggs says:

The most important thing we’ve learned,
So far as children are concerned,
    Mummy, Daddy Moan, Moan, Moan,
Its like they should be on a throne,
    Don’t do this
    Don’t do that
    Leave it alone
    No!!!! Put that down,
We feel like saying heres your crown,
    And take a Bow,
We know our parents want us to be a success
and to see us become this,
    is worth all the stress

The most important thing we’ve learned,
So far as children are concerned,
Don’t worry if your home is a mess, just enjoy your children and go with it.
When your house if full of laughter all is good. When all goes quiet its time to worry when you sneak upstairs they will be sorry! When they are covered in your most expensive cream and your walls are smeered with chocolate body wash!!!!! Just relax and chill and laugh it off. Enjoy every minute, because in a flash childhood is finished.
