Liz Pichon is one very impressive children’s book author. She is the current holder of the Blue Peter Book Award as well a previous winner of the Roald Dahl Funny Prize.
The Tom Gates books have been a huge success, translated in to 20 languages and the winner of further accolades such as theRed House Book Award and Waterstone’s Children’s Book Prize.
The author, Pichon, has also been a featured World Book Day author.
The Tom Gates series is based around the life and thoughts of a young boy. Effectively written from his perspective as he takes down his thoughts by all manner of scribbled means. So as well as having a delightful narrative and story, children’s enjoyment of reading them is enhanced by the addition of complementing doodles amongst the text.
A style that has been incredible successful in proving to children how interesting and exciting books can be. The stories quite literally leap out of the pages of a Tom Gates book.
Do you love a doodle too? What’s the last thing you doodled or drew? Leave a comment telling us what is was to enter our giveaway. Good Luck!
But before you give yourself a great chance of winning a copy of the book have a read of what we made of Tom Gates: Extra Special Treats (Not).
WHAT THE PARENT THOUGHT
It’s been a struggle to review this book. Not because I have nothing to say about it, but simply because my son has hardly let it out of his grasp!
In situations like this I normally rely on him leaving it at home while he goes to school for me to have a peak. However on this occasion, such is his enjoyment in this book, he’s been taking it to school to read a break times!
He even came home having made a ‘Tom Gates’ themed bookmark and keyring.
I’ve had little, to no chance, of picking it up.
However I have managed a little time at his side for him to read me parts of this book. Which really is fantastic, a book that clearly works brilliantly on reluctant readers. I can’t really praise it any more.
Other than to say the doodles are inspiring, and do make you wonder what will be on the next page. And whilst this book may be aimed at the emerging and established reader age group, I’m sure a younger child would enjoy them being read parts of these books too.
