If your kid ever asks: “Why is the goldfish doing that?” Then this is the book you need to give them! We review Memoirs of a Goldfish and Memoirs of a Hamster by Devin Scillian and Tim Bowers.
Swimming around in your bowl on your own, writing your memoirs, having plenty of space: This is the perfect life for our goldfish hero, until unwanted guests appear. The goldfish records his thoughts in his memoirs, written for laughs in diary form by award winning author Devin Scillian.
The goldfish is pleasingly grumpy as first aquatic plants and toys appear in his bowl but the grumbling turns to howls of outrage as another fish, and a pregnant fish, and a crab arrives. How will our goldfish get a moment’s peace, and will he like it when he does get a bowl to himself again?
The illustrations are bright and lively and the goldfish has wonderfully expressive eyes and looking not a little like a grumpy old man!
Building on this winning format, ‘Memoirs of a Hamster’ follow Seymour the hamster who’s living a simple but happy life in his cage. When he is tempted out of his cage by a conniving cat (aren’t they all?)on a promise of riches (sunflower seeds) he finds that life isn’t quite so easy after all on the outside.
The kids thought these books were cute, and enjoyed the animals’ personalities.
Memoirs of a Goldfish and Memoirs of a Hamster by Devin Scillian and illustrated by Tim Bowers are published by Sleeping Bear Press and are available from www.sleepingbearpress.com who kindly provided the review copies.
